Don't hang from vehicles in motorcades
The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) on people to stop hanging from moving vehicles during political campaigns.
Dr Lucien Jones, Vice-Chairman and Convenor, NRSC, said this can result in road crashes which lead to unnecessary injury and death. He said up to February 10, 35 persons have tragically lost their lives in road crashes, and all road users, including those on the campaign trail, should exercise great caution on our roads.
fatality rate
"As a country we need to each do our part to reduce road crashes and political campaigning should not worsen our already high fatality rate, leading up to the general elections on February 25," he said.
Paula Fletcher, Executive Director, NRSC, is pleading with Donna Parchment-Brown, the Politician Ombudsman, the Elections Centre, Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections and party leaders to ensure that persons in motorcades drive within the speed limit, do not engage in body protrusion and obey the laws outlined in the Road Traffic Act.
SSP Calvin Allen, Head of the Traffic Division in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, is in full support of this call. "Body protrusion is a dangerous practice and it is against the Road Traffic Act. We have been speaking with numerous offenders and taking the necessary actions against them," SSP Allen said.
